Sandra Swearingen, PhD, RN

Director, Center for Leadership and Learning

Description of present position: Dr. Swearingen is the Director of the Center for Leadership and Learning at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida.

Work Experience: Her work experience encompasses a variety of managerial, clinical and academic settings with a concentration in Operational Administration, Performance Improvement, Leadership Development, Continuing Education, and Nursing Research.





June Stovall, BA

Manager of Training & Development

MBTI Certified, DDI Certified Facilitator, Langevin Certified Trainer


Description of present position: June is a Training and Development manager for LDV. She is responsible for day to day operations of the department as well as manages the logistics of the class offerings. She also manages the Nursing Leadership Development program as well as New Leader Experience and REACH.

BA, Sociology & Psychology - Pacific University

Work Experience: June has worked in a hospital environment her entire career in a multitude of fields.  She has worked as a program coordinator for a department of surgery for a teaching hospital in Oregon; a medical transcriptionist  for a Pathology Lab and, most recently, as an occupational health sales person.  She joined Florida Hospital as a sales account executive for Centra Care. In 2001, she joined the newly created Leadership Development department.  In 2007, she joined Dr. Sandra Swearingen to coordinate Nursing Leadership Development and now manages the joint department of Nursing LDV and LDV.





Gary L. Owens, Jr., MSSL

Manager of Training & Development

Description of present position: Supplementing the supervision of department operations, Gary is responsible for the strategic oversight of the Grassroots Initiative and Leadership Development Coaching. Additionally, he serves as a trainer and consultant for other departments in the development and delivery of custom, research-based leadership institutes.

Work Experience: Gary’s experiences are as diverse as his education. He worked seven years in a veterinary hospital while attending high school and college. He conducted a church choir while singing for Lindsey Wilson College’s official touring group. He was a school counselor for two elementary schools in Kentucky then moved to Florida to work at Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis. After developing a great friend from Florida Hospital, he decided that he wanted to become a part of the family.





Phoebe Marie Burda, BSN, RN

Nursing Leadership Development Coordinator

Description of present position: Phoebe oversees leadership development programs for all levels of nursing. She also coordinates the Succession Plans for all Florida Hospital nurses who are identified as potential leaders and implements the training as necessary. Phoebe is also actively involved in the Grass Roots Initiative program.

Work Experience: Phoebe has been a nurse in the Orlando area for 26 years with a focus on neonatal intensive care and pediatrics. Her vast experience includes clinical, education, management, operations and leadership. She joined the Florida Hospital family in 2006 in the department of pediatrics where working closely with Nurse Practice Councils, she helped launch the first application for Magnet recognition for the Children’s Hospital.

Description of present position: The Coach utilizes many available tools to assist the FH leaders in assessing, evaluating, and developing their leadership skills

Work Experience: Susan has been privileged to have worked in the Nursing arena for 30 years. Her many years have taken her through the ranks from staff level to administration in many different areas of healthcare around the country. Her experience includes clinical, operations, teaching and leadership

Claudia J. Schoener, RNC, MS

Description of Present Position: Claudia utilizes many available tools to assist FH leaders in assessing evaluation, and developing their leadership skills.

Work Experience: Claudia has spent 30 years in nursing with 15 years being in Administration. She loves to create outcomes, change metrics, and work on teambuilding. She has worked clinically in Women’s Health, Genetics, and Infertility. Clinical model change has been a favorite area. Most of the last 12 years has been as a Director of a Women’s Service line.

 





 

Kathy Mitchell, BA

Grass Roots Initiative Coordinator

Description of present position: Grass Roots Initiative Coordinator for the Center for Leadership and Learning in Orlando.

Education:
BA, Communicative Disorders - University of Central Florida

Work Experience: Encompasses marketing and community relations, physician referral, and clinical, clerical and training settings. Kathy has worked for Florida Hospital since 1986 (Winter Park) and she joined the Center for Nursing Education at FH Orlando in 2000. As a Project Coordinator, she joined Sandy Swearingen, PhD, in the delivery of Nursing Leadership classes in 2006. She is currently a member of the Leadership Development team where she assists in facilitating the revised Grass Roots Initiative program as well as other topics for personal and staff development. She is involved in various community services including Shepherd’s Hope (medical records management) and the Interfaith Hospitality Network.





Jennifer Sherman, PHR

Description of present position: Jennifer is responsible for teaching the development of leadership skills in leadership personnel along with curriculum design for clinical and non-clinical staff.  She works to plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs in response to leadership development trends, leadership learning needs, and organizational goals.

Work Experience: Jennifer joins the LDV team after several years in Human Resources with Florida Hospital. Her experience has included working with both Applicant Services as a Nurse Recruiter to Employee Development Services. Her most recent experience was working on Employee Recognition and Engagement.   




David Goodridge, MA

Education Specialist

 

Description of present position: David is an Education Specialist with the Center.  He is primarily responsible for designing and delivering general leadership education classes via the bi-yearly course schedule.  David’s personal lifestyle of good nutrition and physical activity makes him especially qualified for teaching stress and life balance subjects.

MA, Counseling- Webster University


Work Experience: David has had experience in a variety of genres. Following his 8 years in payroll in New York City, he pursued a bachelor’s degree and was also employed as Campus Safety Officer.  After receiving his BS degree he then worked as a Clinical Specialist, specializing in the treatment and assessment of the chronically mentally ill.  He was a personal trainer at the Central Florida YMCA for 5 years.  After receiving his MA, he counseled emotionally troubled children and adults, focusing on improving relationships. In 2005, David joined FH College as an adjunct professor. In March of 2010, he transferred to the Florida Hospital Center for Leadership and Learning team.


Maria Uribe-Alarcon, LHRM

Training Coordinator/Information Systems Coordinator (I.S.C.)

Description of present position: Maria is responsible for coordinating classes for the Center for Leadership and Learning , its personnel required in relation to class timing, performance of didactic lectures by speakers, securing supporting materials, and proctoring classes to assure smooth operation of service delivery. As the Information Systems Coordinator (I.S.C.) – Maria maintains computer databases, is responsible for equipment purchases, system access authorizations, and securing employee information..

Work Experience: On February 2002 Maria became a full time employee at Florida Hospital working with the Risk Management Department. She joined the Leadership Development Department in March 2008. She is also a member of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.


Maribel Rodriguez, BS

Description of present position: Assistant to Sandra Swearingen, PhD, RN, Director of the Center for Leadership and Learning.

Work Experience: She has 20 plus years of diverse experience in Administration encompassing federal and state government, in the public and private sector as well. In 2008, she joined the Leadership Development team.
