The Journey to Leadership
The journey of a million miles begins with the first steps. At Florida Hospital, our path through nursing leadership development is called "The Journey to Leadership". As with many journeys, the first steps are small, easy steps with larger, harder steps being taken as we progress through our journey. We are seeking the pinnacle of excellence in leadership for nursing. Through the different levels of leadership development, nurses can progress through the journey and gain leadership skills.
Nursing Leadership Development Curriculum
NLD 100 Courses
Nursing level 100 courses are meant as a starting point for any new leader in nursing. The new leader experience is mandatory for all NM & ANM's.
NLD 200 Courses
Nursing level 200 courses are the beginning steps on the Journey to Leadership. These classes are meant for nurses who are either at the Charge Nurse level, the Supervisor level, NPC Chair, NPC Co-Chair, or nurses wanting to advance to these levels from a staff position.
Currently there are three level 200 sections for continuing education.
The courses do not have to be taken in order although they do build on each other. These classes are offered on a quarterly basis and are open to any nurse who wishes to attend them. Nurses can register for these classess through NetLearning.
NLD 300 Series
This class is intended for developing Assistant Nurse Managers and new Nurse Managers. Nurses are taught project management, communication skills, team building skills, and general leadership knowledge. They are held monthly for a period of one year.
NLD 400 Series
Nursing Leadership 400 is intended for Nurse Managers and Directors who want to further develop their leadership skills. It is a Clinical Leadership Residency that is a year long. During this residency, nurses are given indepth training in communication skills, leadership styles, and are expected to complete a "stretch" project that will teach them new skills in relation to project management. Completion of this project will result in participant receiving a Six-Sigma Yellow Belt.
NLD 500 Series
Nursing Leadership 500 Series is intended for tenured nurse managers, CNO's, AVP's, and VP's in nursing. It is a series of presentations that build on leadership skills that these positions already possess. External and internal consultants are brought in to teach this series of classes.
It is recommended that a nurse attend Series 200, 300, 400, and 500, respectively.
